Most of us don’t like to think about our inevitable death so vital things such as making a Will and Estate Planning can sometimes be put off until it’s too late!
People often assume that their assets will automatically go to their next of kin who will then take care of other family members as they see fit but this isn’t always the case. Instead, it can get complicated and cause disputes to the point of legal action.
Although it is possible to “write your own”, this can often be a false economy as your beneficiaries could end up spending thousands trying to prove your Will.
We have a specialist Wills & Probate team who are able to help with a wide range of needs, from straightforward Wills to the administration of large and complex estates with more risk of being hit by Inheritance Tax.
Providing a holistic approach, we can work closely with your accountant or financial adviser to provide safe and sensible arrangements and to make sure your estate is as tax-efficient as possible.
This department also handles:
- Probate procedures and the administration of estates in accordance with a Will or, in the absence of a Will, the Intestacy Rules
- Lasting Powers of Attorney which allow clients to choose who will handle their affairs should they no longer be able to do so in the future.
- Applications to the Court of Protection, in cases where the client is unable to look after their own financial affairs
Unlike some firms who charge a percentage of the total estate, we only charge an hourly rate for the exact amount of work we do. In relation to Court of Protection work our fees can be capped which will not add to the financial burden.
From October 2007 we will also be able to offer Advance Directives, otherwise referred to as "Living Wills", which allow clients to state in advance what treatment they would not wish to have should they be unable to communicate their lack of consent at the time of treatment.
